When Dean apologizes for ‘hitting’ Lisa and Ben in the ‘car accident’, he’s also apologizing for literally hitting Ben. Dean was clearly very bothered not only by the events of the night, but at the way he handled such events. Knowing Dean’s history with abuse, (“…and when Dad came home…”), it would definitely upset him on a deep level that he turned on his surrogate son in such a way.
